Every year between July and September, John Kamunyi embarks on a motorcycle ride in memory of his late mother. In 2023, as part of his tradition, he set out with a friend on a weeklong journey from Nairobi to Kigali, passing through Kampala and back.
The ride was smooth and memorable. Once they reached Kigali, however, the two parted ways; his friend headed back to Nairobi while John stayed behind to attend a function in Kampala. On his solo return journey, the ride from Kampala to Jinja was uneventful.
But shortly after passing Jinja, disaster struck. He was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that left him unconscious on the roadside, with severe injuries that required urgent medical care.
Despite already having insurance through his employer, Mr. Kamunyi had also taken up an annual membership cover with the Flying Doctors Society of Africa (FDSA) for added peace of mind.
When he regained consciousness, he immediately reached out to FDSA.
This is when the Flying Doctors Society of Africa stepped in, and in his words, “came through a good one.” Thanks to that membership, he was airlifted from Uganda to Nairobi, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The entire process from the air evacuation to hospital admission was seamless.
Each evacuation tells a story of urgency and care. One such story is that of John Kamunyi, a long-time member whose annual memorial ride turned into a medical emergency, and a testament to the life-saving impact of being covered.
